About the Item

China, 18th Century, Blue-and-White Decorated Dish, circa 1780 This Chinese export porcelain dish, made around 1780 during the reign of Emperor Qianlong (1736-1795), illustrates the excellence of underglaze cobalt blue. Its generous dimensions (38.6 x 32 x 4.4 cm) and octagonal shape demonstrate a concern for aesthetics and functionality, designed to appeal to Western customers of the time. The decoration, entirely hand-painted, depicts a rural landscape adorned with pavilions and waterside mountains. Figures evoke daily life in 18th-century China. The blue-and-white technique, originated in Jingdezhen, requires perfect firing control to preserve the brilliance of the cobalt pigment. This porcelain was loaded onto ships chartered by the East India Company and then transported to Europe, where it was highly prized by the elite. Merchants, aware of the craze for exoticism, commissioned such pieces according to precise specifications to satisfy diverse tastes. The dish is in perfect condition, a testament to its quality and the attention paid to its preservation. Its bucolic decoration, both understated and refined, bears witness to the artistic dialogue between China and the West in the 18th century, a prosperous period for the spread of export porcelain. Observing it reveals not only the remarkable technical expertise of the Jingdezhen potters, but also the fascination of European courts with pieces from the Far East. This fascination helped forge the reputation of Chinese porcelain, a symbol of luxury and refinement, even in the grandest Western residences.
