Chinese Export Porcelain "Pronk Arbor" Dish, Qianlong Period, c 1738, China
About the Item
A fine and rare Chinese Export famille rose enameled porcelain "Pronk Arbor" plate, 18th century, Qianlong Period, circa 1738, China.
A beautifully decorated Chinese Export porcelain plate painted in both soft and bold famille rose enamels, creating nice contrasts and pops of color. The central design features a courting couple surrounded by attendants and children within a lush arbor filled with topiaries and blossoming flowers. A gentle water feature before them features lotus and a pair of swimming ducks.
The border decorated with a series or reserves painted with images of flowers, fruit, and insects, including butterflies, crickets, and moths. Interspersed between the reserves are images of seashells and acanthus in iron red. All of this against an attractive diaper patterned turquoise enamel ground. The rim of the plate gilt.
The back with a simple lambrequin border in iron red. Also with an H. Moog, Atlanta collection sticker for Henry Moog Fine Porcelains. Henry Moog (1938 - 2012), was one of the foremost experts in Chinese Export and China Trade porcelains. Also with an attached Christie's label - sale 14962, lot 212 (sold in 2017 for $3,750).
The design of this plate it attributed to Cornelius Pronk (1691 - 1759) for the Dutch East India Company. It is considered the fourth and last design he did for the company. It is said his designs were too complicated and expensive to produce in large quantities, making his designs highly desirable and collectible.
