Chinese Sancai Guanyin Riding a Goose Pottery Roof Tile

About the Item

A very unusual antique Chinese pottery roof tile depicting Guanyin riding on the back of a goose and believed to date from the late Qing period. The hollow formed earthenware figure stands raised on a rounded ridge tile mounted with a lotus flower base on which a seated goose sits perched with Guanyin sat astride on the back of the goose with one arm raised and the other holding a small ball shaped vessel close to her body. The figure is hand pained in Sancai glazes in tones of white, turquoise, brown and black with the face and hands left unglazed and with simple painted detail to the eyes. The ridge tile has a white glazed finish with the underside unglazed and piece is not marked but with signs of age to the base. Provenance: Acquired in the UK Art Market. In good condition with customary wear and aging with some fine age crazing to the glazed finish.
