Fine Japanese Satsuma Vase Hand-Painted marked base, 19th Century Meiji Period

About the Item

This is a very good quality Earthenware Japanese Satsuma vase, beautifully hand decorated and from the Meiji period, circa 1875. The vase has a hexagonal shape raised on a circular foot, with a sharp shoulder and a small neck and mouth. The vase is made from earthenware having a fine crackle glaze as it should. It is finely hand decorated with three different panels all set into a gold gilt decorated midnight inky blue ground. The hand enamelling and gold gilded work is high quality. The three panels are; 1) Figurative with two ladies and one man holding a skull. 2) A flowering leafy bush 3) A waterside scene with pagoda and trees. The base has a black and gold makers seal mark with a painters mark to the base rim. Overall a beautiful Satsuma Vase dating to the 19th century.

This outstanding late 19th century Japanese Satsuma porcelain covered temple jar has a traditional form with a domed lid. The piece features exquisite hand painted decoration which includes brightly hued flowers and associated foliage along with highly detailed jewel-toned butterflies with gilt highlights, all of which are on a shaded blue ground.
