Gen Kozuru Signed Japanese Agano Yaki Ware Pottery Vase with Signed & Sealed Box
About the Item
A wonderfully designed (note the intricate hand created repeated pattern detail), quite large and heavy Mingei Agano Yaki ware pottery vase by Japanese artist Gen Kozuru (1938- ).
Agano ware (上野焼, Agano-yaki) is a type of Japanese stoneware pottery traditionally made in Fukuchi, Tagawa District, Fukuoka and is characterized by its high-fired clay body and distinctive glaze techniques. It was originally associated with traditional tea ceremony pieces, but later transitioned and adopted more modern and abstract style works such as this vase
Kozuru is one of Agano Yakii wares most well known and famous potters. In the 1980s he moved to the United States and established a kiln in Boston, MA, where he has continued to produce wonderful pieces (he also operated his kiln back in Fukuoka Japan during this time). Kozuru's work can be found in many permeant private collections and museums including the Kyoto Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) Boston among others. A recent exhibition of his work - The Wind from Topsfield - was held at the Fukuoka Mitsukoshi Gallery in 2020.
The vase is signed by Kozuru with his stamped mark on the bottom/base and also comes with the original hand signed and sealed wood tomobako box. The vase was created around 45-50 years ago.

Kinpei Nakamura Signed Japanese Abstract Pottery Vase With Original Sealed Box
Located in Studio City, CA
A wonderfully designed and crafted abstract Japanese studio pottery vase/sculpture by renowned potter Kinpei (Kimpei) Nakamura (1935- ).
Kinpei Nakamura was born in the town of Kanazawa, A chance encounter with pottery master Kitaôji Rosanjin at a young age influenced him greatly and he began his artistic pottery career in Japan during the 1960s. Early on, he was heavily influenced by 20th Century Western abstract painting and sculpture as well as Jomon-style ceramics and modernist sculpture (as clearly seen in this piece). His experiments with forms and textures were considered quite radical at the time. He would later travel to the united States to further his studies (he was inspired by American potters such as Peter Voulkos) and career. Today his works can be found in major ceramic art collections and museums worldwide.
The work is signed by Nakamura on the base and comes with the original signed and sealed box...
