About the Item
A stunning and sumptuously, naturally glazed large work by Japanese pottery master Izuru Yamamoto (Born 1944- He is the son of the late Toshu Yamamoto- a Japanese Living National Treasure) who is famed for his Bizen-yaki stoneware pottery made in the Bizen area in the Okayama Prefecture of Japan. Bizen ware is often identifiable by its ironlike hardness and reddish-brown color. Bizen ware artists rarely use glazes instead hoping for a natural glaze that if the circumstances are favorable occurs by chance in the wood-burning kiln. In Japan, this aesthetic is highly desirable when this happens.
Signed on the base of the tsubo jar with Yamamoto's mark. The wood protective box is also signed and sealed by the artist in red ink.
This piece was acquired by the previous owner at the prestigious Robert Yellin Gallery in Kyoto, Japan in 2008 where it was described as "The globular form of this pot is called full bunrin-apple. The firing is a rich varied colored yohen with a magical clay window toward the base streaked with ghostly hidasuki lines. Between the ash glaze and the window, this tsubo is quite magnificent. "
Yamamoto's work was collected by the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo among other international collections and museums (Sèvres Museum, Paris Brooklyn Museum, NY... )
In 1985, Yamamoto received the Kaneshige Toyo Award.
In 2012, he was designated as an Okayama Prefectural Important Intangible Cultural Property Holder

Kaneshige Toyo National Treasure Signed Japanese Bizen Pottery Sake Bottle Vase

A beautiful, perfectly shaped and balanced antique Bizen ware shibui sake bottle (tokkuri) vase by renowned Japanese master potter/artist Kaneshige Toyo (1896-1967) featuring a unique natural, wonderfully textured organic forming ash glaze. Kaneshige is universally considered to be the founder of modern Bizen pottery.
In 1956, Kaneshige was certified as a Living National Treasure (Important Intangible Cultural Heritage) for his work in Bizen Ware pottery/ceramics. Bizen Ware is a type of Japanese pottery traditionally from the Bizen province, presently a part of the Okayama prefecture. It is considered one of the Six Ancient Japanese Kilns (along with Echizen ware, Seto ware, Shigaraki ware, Tamba ware, and Tokoname ware).
The piece is signed/ sealed on the base with one of Kaneshige's traditional incised marks.
A rather striking and engaging work. One of the best Kaneshige works we have come across. Scarce and hard to find in such an excellent condition. Would be a fantastic addition to any Japanese/Asian pottery or Bizen Ware collection or eye-catching stand-alone work in about any setting.
