About the Item

A beautiful Japanese Mingei Nezumi Shino Ware (志野焼, Shino-Yaki) pottery Chawan tea bowl for tea ceremony that features a sumptuous glaze with wonderful subtle shifts in color, pattern, and texture and a quite wonderful bird/crane (Tsuru (鶴)) decorative motif. Shino-Yaki is Japanese pottery, usually stoneware, originally from Mino Province (present-day Gifu Prefecture, Japan). It first appeared in the 16th century Momoyama era (1568-1600).and is one of the most loved and coveted varieties of ceramics in Japan. Shino glaze can range from snowy white to deep cream and grey with red scorch marks and is recognizable by its dense texture that often produces patterns of small holes. The work is signed on the base with the maker's mark. This particular piece also encompasses the Japanese Wabi-Sabi aesthetic (which is so revered and coveted in Japan) - the appreciation of beauty that is imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete in nature and embraces the principles of asymmetry, roughness, simplicity, economy, austerity, modesty, intimacy, and the appreciation of both natural objects and the forces of nature upon them. A unique, solid work with a wonderful feel to it. . Would be a great addition to any Japanese or Asian pottery/ ceramics collection or a very eye-catching stand-alone accent work in about any setting. Dimensions: 3.75" high, 5.5" diameter
