About the Item

Extraordinary Japanese contemporary decorative porcelain vase, intricately hand-painted on a beautifully shaped porcelain body in vivid blue, brown and green, a signed masterpiece by highly acclaimed award-winning second generation master porcelain artist of the Imari-Arita region in southern Japan. The artist's profile is available upon request. Foliage hanging on vines decorate the entire body. Playful squirrels in brown and gold appear here and there to feast on the ripened grapes. An intricate pattern in brown and gold on the background creates the perfect canvas for the above pattern. The squirrel-and-grape motif has a long history in China where it has traditionally been used as a symbol of fertility and rich harvest. Introduced to Japan, the motif took on a different meaning reflecting a complex play on words where squirrel is a homonym for “to master or to excel in” and grape is a homonym for “martial arts.” For this reason, the squirrel-and-grape motif was highly valued in samurai families and used extensively to decorate the handguards of samurai swords. The motif was later adopted by Imari porcelain artists to appeal to the aesthetics of the warrior class. This magnificent porcelain vase comes in a custom-made wooden box with the artist’s signature.
