Large Pair Japanese Coral Ground Imari Covered Vases on Stands, Getty Collection

About the Item

A Monumental and Very Rare Pair of Japanese Coral Ground Imari Covered Vases on Stands, from the Getty Collection. Each painted to the front and back with a gentleman on horseback, a lady in a rickshaw and numerous children and attendants, the sides with two ladies arranging flowers in an interior, the surrounding iron-red ground with bands of red whorls, the undersides inscribed Hichozan Nakamura sei, each cover with conforming decoration and a pair of confronting fish-form finials, the stands each with a red and blue socle on a domed base with six cloud-shaped feet, painted with blue and white flowers, clouds and whorls. Every aspect of their bodies are hand-adorned with gilt decoration. The entirety of the vases are hand-enameled with the most gorgeous decorations. Vases of this size were seldomly manufactured due to their highly difficult size and required kiln to fire the porcelain. They are marked with Getty collection stickers. Japan, Circa: 1880-1900
