About the Item
Antique ginger jar with lid, porcelain, China, Qing Dynasty, 19th century, pumpkin-shaped featuring boys at play in Famille Rose colors.
This elegant piece, an antique ginger jar most likely from the Tongzhi period (1861-1875), showcases a meticulously hand-painted scene in rich, colorful overglaze enamels. The artwork depicts a scenery filled with blossoming trees in traditional Chinese style. It is adorned with decorations on all sides, featuring boys at play in a garden and symbolic bats, which are associated with happiness and prosperity. The theme of young boys playing in a courtyard garden is prevalent in Chinese decorative arts, expressing a wish for many successful sons. The boys are shown with everyday objects like fans, lanterns, or a qin, a musical instrument symbolizing high Chinese culture, frequently depicted by scholars.
The vibrant enamel colors are thick and lively. The original lid, which is a rare find, complements this exquisite piece! Dating back to the Late Qing Dynasty Tongzhi period, this antique Chinese ginger jar stands out with its beautiful decoration in the Famille Rose palette, celebrated for its delicate pinks, greens, and intricate details, all hand-painted with care.
With its intricate decoration and playful colors, this Famille Rose ginger jar is a delightful way to enhance any interior space.
QING STYLE
The last imperial dynasty from 1644 to 1912 was a time of change in China, beginning with the invasion by Manchurian forces that ended the Ming dynasty and established the Shunzhi Emperor. The expansion of exportation and trade that had bolstered the arts during the Ming era continued, as Qing dynasty furniture involved the same attention to craftsmanship with expert construction techniques in hardwood pieces that were assembled with mortise and tenon joints rather than nails or glue. Together, these eras comprise a golden age of Chinese furniture design.
Bats were symbols of happiness in the design of Qing furniture, with one of the characters in the word for bat, bianfu, being a homophone for fu, or “fortune.”

Qianlong period Canton Enamel Square Dish with Dragon, China Late 18th Century
Located in Grythyttan, SE
This small and exquisite Chinese Canton Qianlong period enamel square dish features cut corners and is beautifully decorated with a five-clawed pink dragon surrounded by 18 blue ruyi clouds against a vibrant yellow background. The design is accented by two branches of peaches (or similar fruit) and two branches of peach blossoms (or other fruit blossoms), all framed by an intricate seaweed pattern border.
In Chinese symbolism, five-clawed dragons are reserved exclusively for emperors, as the number five is considered sacred, representing the five elements. In contrast, four-clawed dragons are associated with kings, princes, and high-ranking officials, while three-clawed dragons are designated for the merchant class.
This piece is crafted from enamel on brass, dating back to the Qianlong period (1736–1795), and is characterized by its hexagonal form and the distinctive Famille Rose palette, often referred to as "Canton enamel."
Chinese painted enamel, commonly known as Canton enamel, derives its name from its principal manufacturing location, Canton. This technique was introduced to China in the 18th century, likely by French missionaries, and is inspired by the enameling techniques developed in Limoges, France around 1470. It is referred to in China as "foreign porcelain," suitable since much of it was made for export.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, there was significant demand in the West for Chinese porcelain dinner sets...
