This early 20th-century bentwood bamboo/rattan/wicker Chinese wedding basket with polychrome paint is marvelously beautiful. The basket It has very beautiful and intricate weaving details and showcases a rounded body and a squared, fixed handle at the top. Adorned with floral patterns of peony buds and blooms, a bird, and other decorative elements on its surface. Designed in the typical form for a "Guo Da Li" ceremony, this Chinese betrothal or marriage basket is painted with traditional motifs featuring peony buds and blooms. GUO DA LI CEREMONY: The Guo Da Li ceremony, a crucial Chinese betrothal tradition, signifies the formal meeting between the two families. Taking place a few weeks before the wedding, the groom presents various gifts in the basket, symbolizing his sincerity in marrying the bride and ensuring her well-being after marriage. The motifs, such as peony buds and blooms, symbolize fertility and prosperity. CONDITION: The basket shows wear consistent with its age and use. The paint has worn off in some areas, making it somewhat challenging to discern the overall motifs. There is wear to the finish of the painted handle. Additionally, the binding holding the support sticks at the bottom has loosened. Note that the basket does not come with a lid.
