Late 19th Century Signed Japanese Hand Painted Satsuma Temple Jar Meiji Period
About the Item
This outstanding late 19th century Japanese Satsuma porcelain covered temple jar has a traditional form with a domed lid. The piece features exquisite hand painted decoration which includes brightly hued flowers and associated foliage along with highly detailed jewel-toned butterflies with gilt highlights, all of which are on a shaded blue ground. The jar and lid also bear large chrysanthemums executed in heavy white enamel with underlying hints of green. The collar of the jar and edge of the lid have wide gilt bands finished with fine incised linear decoration that has been accented with blue, black and white enamel. The underside of the jar is hand lettered with characters reading Dai Nippon Taizan Sei.

This late 19th century porcelain vase was designed by Eduard Stellmacher for Riessner, Stellmacher & Kessel Amphora of Turn-Teplitz, Bohemia. The piece has a Classic Art Nouveau form and features a dimensional nymph partially encased in the leaves of a lily of the valley plant. The maiden's body is accented by two delicate arched tendrils finished in gilt which bear small white lily of the valley blossoms, also accented in gilt. The remainder of the piece is painted in shades of light green and ochre with gilt highlights.
An example of this shape with similar painted decoration can be seen on page 37 of Richard L. Scott's 'Ceramics From The House Of Amphora 1890-1915.' As an antique item, the vase shows appropriate signs of age consisting of wear to the gilded decoration along with a shallow chip on one of the ridged leaves on the back of the piece. The foot is 4" in diameter and bears the red RStK mark reading "RStK TURN Teplitz...

19th Century French Creil & Montereau Hand Painted Aesthetic Movement Charger

This outstanding hand painted 19th century French ceramic charger was made by Hautin Boulenger & Cie at Creil & Montereau. The highly detailed Aesthetic Movement charger features polychrome decoration depicting a Japanese quail perched in a flowering cherry tree bearing vivid green foliage. The bird's gaze is fixed on a colorful butterfly with intricately patterned wings which is located off to one side. The image is set on a gilt ground which bears a series of repeating raised gilt motifs. The charger's shoulder is finished in cobalt blue with stylized gilt hearts separated by light blue floral and foliate elements.
The 4lb 11oz charger bears an impressed mark used by Creil et Montereau between 1876-1884. The foot rim is not pierced.

This large hand-painted charger was made by Mintons Art Pottery Studio of Kensington Gore, London. The studio traces its origins to the renowned earthenware and fine bone china factory Minton, located in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire England. Colin Minton Campbell, descendant of founder Thomas Minton, took over company management in 1858 and went on to establish Mintons Art Pottery Studio in 1871 for the purpose of hand decorating pottery and tiles. The studio initially operated under the direction of painter and book illustrator William Stephen Coleman and drew upon the talents of artists studying at the Kensington's National Art Training School, now known as the Royal College of Art, as well as those of well-regarded Continental artists. The company was short lived as it was destroyed by an accidental fire in 1875 and was not rebuilt.
