Signed Sara Sax Rookwood Pottery Lidded Rectangular Box

About the Item

Signed Rookwood Pottery box by Sara Sax. This gorgeous ceramic lidded rectangular box was made by Rookwood Pottery of Cincinnati, Ohio, and decorated by renowned artist, Sara Sax. Rookwood has long been recognized as one of the premier producers of fine art pottery in the world. Founded in 1880, Rookwood's artisans experimented with new techniques and glazes, developing their own distinctive style and creating pieces that are still highly sought after by collectors today. Sax joined the decorating staff at Rookwood Pottery in 1896 and worked there until 1931. Considered one of Rookwood's most important artists, she was instrumental in mastering many of the company's famous glaze lines. This circa 1922 ceramic box is rectangular in shape. The lid features a profusion of blossoms framed by a geometric border. The sides of the lid also have bas relief decoration consisting of a fish scale, like pattern. The central floral grouping is hand decorated in muted hues of rose, purple, blue, teal with green foliage, a color scheme echoed in each of the four corners and on the borders of the piece. The inside of the lid bears a deep royal blue glaze that complements the ecru exterior of the box. The base of the box has thick walls with a geometric motif and coloration on the exterior which echoes that found on the lid. The inside is finished in the same rich blue glaze found on the interior of the lid. The box and lid are in very good antique condition with no cracks or repairs. That said, it should be noted that there are a few slight anomalies in the glaze including pinpricks and areas of minor discoloration, all of which are commonly found in handmade pottery. There is negligible display related wear to the base as well as a few minor chips to the inside rim of the lid. None of these issues detract from the appearance or function of the piece and as seen in the accompanying photographs, it displays beautifully. The box stands 2.375" tall and measures 6.5" x 3.75" at the base. The interior opening is 5.5" x 2.875", and has a depth of 1 6/8". The glazed foot bears Rookwood's impressed "RP" logo along with their characteristic 14 flame mark and the Roman numeral "XXII", dating the box to 1922. It also has the incised code "2643" referencing the mold number of the pieces, and Sara Sax's cipher. The box and lid have a combined weight of 2lbs 1oz. This highly collectible Sara Sax art pottery box would be a fantastic addition to an existing collection of artist signed Rookwood pieces, or works well as a classic decorative accent on a table or mantelpiece. Sure to add an elegant touch to your decor.

  • Antique Rookwood Pottery Hand Painted Vessel Gorham Engraved Silver Decoration
    By Rookwood Pottery Co., Gorham
    Located in Cincinnati, OH
This late 19th century glazed earthenware mug was crafted in the studios of Cincinnati Ohio's renowned Rookwood Pottery Company and has a traditional form with an ear-shaped handle having a thumb rest. The exterior of the piece is finished in standard glaze and features hand painted decoration executed by highly regarded artist William Purcell McDonald (1864-1931). The decor has an appealing wine harvest theme consisting of grape vines that snake across the surface. The vines are studded with leaves in various shades of green along with two dangling clusters of plump reddish grapes. McDonald's application of paint is slightly raised in places giving the image a dimensional quality. The mug is further ornamented with an ornate silver overlay manufactured by Gorham. The silver decoration covers the handle and rim and includes a series of large etched foliate scrolls and flowers that extend across the body. There is also an eye-catching latticed area that provides a strong visual contrast with the gentle curving motifs found on the other parts of the silver overlay. The underside of the mug has an impressed RP mark along with shape 422 and the letter W. It also carries the incised initials of the artist - W. P. McD - and the letter L. The underside of the silver foot rim is stamped Gorham Manufacturing Co. along with a hand engraved mark reading S 1274 S. This highly collectible Rookwood silver...

  • Wright & Davies Sterling Silver Box Hand Painted Enamel Plaque with Genre Scene
    By Wright & Davies 1
    Located in Cincinnati, OH
This fabulous rectangular sterling silver box was made in 1887 by English silversmiths William Thomas Wright and Frederick Davies and has been fitted with a hand painted enamel plaque on the lid that features a genre scene. The delightful image is set within an elegantly appointed salon and depicts an artist seated in front of a gilt-framed canvas that bears a partially completed portrait of a baby. The painter is surrounded by an entourage of sumptuously attired women who are attempting to capture the baby's attention and direct it toward the artist. The lid opens with a tapering tab at the front. The child's nurse holds her charge upright on a table that is covered by an ornate embroidered cloth trimmed in fringe. A lady dressed in purple stands next to her and leans toward the child in an attempt to cajole the baby into cooperating with the task at hand. The artist is seated opposite the child on an upholstered bench and holds his paintbrush in his right hand while simultaneously pointing up to a cluster of fruit. The fruit cluster is dangled by a lady dressed in a patterned yellow gown who wears a bemused expression on her face as she attempts to focus the baby's attention. Another woman dressed in blue and pink is seated in a green upholstered chair...
