About the Item
A delightful pair of Chinese export famille rose enameled porcelain candle holders, late Qing Dynasty or early Republic Period, early 20th century, China.
The whimsical pair of candleholders each formed as a sturdy elephants standing foursquare, with their heads turned and trunks curled. The elephants are caparisoned, wearing a fancy harness, saddle, and multiple blankets. They carry a large vase upon their backs, acting as the candle holder.
The elephants molded in porcelain, and decorated with famille rose enamels. The bodies of the elephants decorated with delicate brushstrokes resembling fur. Their eyes highlighted in green. Their tusks glazed yellow.
The harness decorated in bright famille rose enamels of pink, turquoise, blue, yellow and coral. The large blanket covering the back glazed in famille jaune enamels of yellow, green and red. The large vase of painted with turquoise enamels with coral highlights. The rim of the vases gilt.
