Pair of 17th Century blue and white dragon wine cups from Hatcher Collection

About the Item

Pair of 17th Century blue and white wine cups from the Hatcher Collection painted with a dragon leaping through cloud scrolls to grasp a flaming pearl. The cups are delicately potted with fluted rims, with a double line border around the foot and a single line around the rim. These cups were part of a hoard recovered by Captain Michael Hatcher from the wreck of a ship that sunk in the South China sea in approximately 1643. Approximately 25,000 pieces from that shipment were sold at auction at Christies Amsterdam in 1984, which Sam and Myrna Myers attended and at which they primarily bought Transitional ware pieces. The Transitional period, which took place between the Ming and Qing dynasties, and which ran from the beginning of the 17th century until approximately 1660, marked a shift in Chinese ceramic styles as the pieces became more original, poetic, and more freely drawn than those made in the official kilns. A dragon holding or chasing a pearl is a common image found in Chinese art and the tale is one of the oldest and best-known legends in Chinese folklore. In it, a boy hides a magical pearl by swallowing it and becomes a dragon who from then on protects the land and its people. The pearl is a symbol of wisdom, spiritual energy and power and the dragon, a rain deity, represents prosperity and good luck. Provenance: Christie's Amsterdam, Hatcher Cargo June 12, 1984, lot no. 405. Similar cups (lot 500) are pictured on p. 12 and p. 47 of the Christie's sale catalog.
