Polychromed Chinoiserie-style Japanese Porcelain Charger Plate by Dai Nippon

About the Item

A black and polychromed Japanese, Chinoiserie-style charger plate, handcrafted in the 1940s by Dai Nippon. Hand-enameled with a colorful Japanese figural scene, it stylistically depicts blooming cherry blossoms and peonies, accompanied by two resplendent green pheasants. This beautiful representation of Japanese flora and fauna offers not only a display of artistry but also deep symbolism. The scene with two green pheasants symbolizes spring, power, love, prosperity, beauty—all the good things in life. The central decorative scene is framed with a dark black border encircling the plate, adorned with simple floral motifs and green scrolls. The deep-black, shiny enamel glaze provides a striking contrast to the vibrant central scene. Signed on its underside and stamped in red with Japanese characters translating to "Dai Nippon," this mark typically dates to the Meiji period (1868-1912). However, it also appeared on export wares well into the 1930s. The stamp is surrounded by three hand-painted concentric lines along the base rim. The plate is in good condition for its age and use, with only one chip on its edge rim.
