About the Item

A fine group of early Ming dynasty (c. 15th century) porcelain dishes, hand-painted in cobalt blue underglaze with floral and foliate motifs. These plates were found in Japan, where Chinese porcelain from the Ming period was highly valued during the Muromachi period (1336–1573). Imported through maritime trade routes or brought by Zen monks and merchants, such pieces became prized possessions in Japanese temples and aristocratic households. They often appeared in tea ceremony contexts (chanoyu) and were carefully preserved, sometimes even remounted with lacquer repairs. Each plate displays slight variations in design and brushwork—typical of hand-crafted Ming blue-and-white ware from kilns such as Jingdezhen. The soft glaze and painterly touch highlight the transitional aesthetics between Yuan and mid-Ming porcelain styles. Date: Early Ming Dynasty, 15th century Origin: Jingdezhen, China Provenance: Found in Japan Material: Porcelain with cobalt underglaze decoration Condition: Very good for age, minor firing imperfections and wear; one with glaze line visible Cultural Note: Such wares were esteemed as karamono (Chinese imports) in Japan and integrated into Japanese material culture during the Muromachi period

Ceramic Bowl by Shigemori Yoko, Japanese Pottery exhibited in V&A Museum
Located in Fukuoka, JP
A striking hand-thrown ceramic bowl by celebrated Japanese artist Shigemori Yoko (1953–2021), known for her expressive, calligraphy-inspired brushwork and sculptural organic forms. This dynamic piece features an asymmetrical form with bold black abstract strokes against a smooth, white glaze — a signature style that blends traditional Japanese ceramic techniques with avant-garde sensibility. The gestural brushwork evokes spontaneous ink painting and speaks to the artist’s early training in painting before turning to ceramics. The exterior is subtly textured, with soft ridges from the wheel and slight warping that enhances the tactile, handmade quality of the bowl. Both sculptural and functional, the piece embodies wabi-sabi aesthetics and would make a striking centerpiece or collectible art object. Shigemori Yoko studied under master ceramicists Kondō Yutaka...
