About the Item
A Rare and Important Pair of Satsuma Vases signed Okamoto Ryozan
Meiji period (late 19th century)
Kyoto, circa 1890
Exhibition Standard
Each of tapering square form with a short waisted neck, finely decorated in gilt and polychrome enamels against a distinctive green ground. The four main panels depict bijin in elegant interiors engaging in music and reading, samurai processional scenes, and lyrical landscapes with mountainous river views. Additional panels feature richly painted peony sprays in bloom, framed within ornate cartouches.
The neck and borders are lavishly embellished with dense floral and textile-style brocade patterns in gilt and coloured enamels. The reverse fields are covered in chrysanthemum and foliate motifs on a jewel-toned ground.
Each base signed in gilt with the seal Ryozan Okamoto, one of the leading painters of the Ryōzan studio under the Yasuda trading company. Works of this calibre—particularly in such exceptional condition and on a rare emerald-green ground—are highly sought after by collectors and institutions.
