About the Item
A striking Burmese red lacquered stupa-shaped offering vessel, hsun-ok, early 20th century, circa 1920, Burma (Myanmar).
The hsun-ok of traditional stupa form, featuring a stepped pedestal base supporting a wide bowl with an interior tray, and a domed cover topped by a tapered and stepped spire, and topped by a spire finial. Stupas are a form of Buddhist architecture marking sacred, historic, or otherwise important sites.
Used as an offering vessel for daily offerings to the Buddha, a temple, or monastic community, hsun-ok are an important cultural aspect of religious life in Burma. Crafted with a basketry base of coiled and woven bamboo strips, the structure is then covered all over in a brilliant red lacquer.
A partial stamp to one side of the lid, possibly for a temple.
Overall a very attractive and striking object.
