About the Item

A charming early patinated metal oil lamp, India, 19th century or earlier. Most likely originating in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, richly cast using the renowned ancient bronze lost wax process, throne inspired form, having a serrated lotus leaf shaped backplate decorated with central seated Gajalakshmi (Lakshmi) figure in relief, a prominent Hindu deity of wealth, prosperity, and fertility, depicted flanked by elephants to either side, over a shallow oil reservoir basin with pinched rim on stepped base with running ornamentation, enhanced by beautifully aged heavily worn verdigris bluish green patina! A wonderful example of functional art or an interesting objet d'art, whether used once again to burn oil for primitive lighting, as a votive candle holder, chamber candlestick stand, incense burner censer, or simply displayed as highly decorative home decor, the rare highly sought-after visually striking verdigris coloring, distinctive small scale sculptural form, intricate relief carved texture, and unique mythical Asian design is sure to add a thoughtful touch of sophisticated antique character, elegant rustic warmth, whimsical spiritual essence, rich historical intrigue and authentic cultural interest to any space! Dimensions: (approx) 6" High, 3.75" Wide, 4.75" Deep Condition: Desirable good original unrestored antique condition.
