About the Item
The Chinese small bronze censer, or incense burner, was cast as the figure of a mythical Luduan, a creature with a leonine body, a single horn, and the paws of a bear. Luduan, sometimes referred to as Fu Dog, Temple Guardian, or Buddhist lion, has its body sculpted with decorative scrolls or flames accents and the neck - with a collar suspending a bell. Its detachable single-horned head is hinged from the front, forming a cover; it is modeled with bulging eyes, bushy brows, and bared teeth, giving it a fierce expression. Luduan is depicted with short curled tail, firmly standing on four sturdy legs with finely detailed feet.
Luduan are auspicious creatures that are able to travel vast distances in a short time and can speak all foreign languages. Censers in this form were produced in bronze as early as the Han dynasty (206 BC- 220 AD). This censer is dating from the Qing dynasty, or 19th century. It is unmarked and is good antique condition with a small loss of the tip of its mane on the left side of its face; please see pictures.
Provenance: the censer was acquired from an estate of a prominent arts and antiques collector in Western New York.
