About the Item

A collection of three bronze bowls from Korean dated to 14-17th century (late Goryeo to early Joseon Dynasty). It consists of an early example with a slight curvy wall and a high foot ring wiht fasten pins. The prototype is dated to 13-14th century of Goryeo dynasty, consistent with the early paper label underneath from "Nieman Marcus", which used to sell antiques in the early 20th century. The second bowl is slightly larger, with a simpler rounded form and a shorter foot ring. It features incised lines around the rim and the base. The base appears to have been reattached with two pins historically. The form indicates that it was from a later age circa 16th century of Joseon period. The third, also the smallest one, is undecorated and is also likely from Joseon period. All three bowls show striking patina due to the prolonged contact with the earth in the ground. Corrosion and encrustation have resulted in a wonderful antique surface, full of characters. Their respective sizes are 6.125"dia x 4"h; 5.85" dia x 3.5"h; 5.25"dia x 3"h. Reference: For two very similar bowls and dating analysis in the collection of Victoria and Albert Musuem in London, see page 110-112 with illustration on page 112. "Korean Art and Design" by Beth Mckillop. (Accession: M.107 dash 1937 and M.103 dash 1937). For similar bowls in the collection of Metropolitan Musuem of Art, see Accession no: 51.196

Antique Korean Mishma Tea Bowl Chawan Joseon Dynasty
Located in Atlanta, GA
A Korean Hori-Mishima Chawan (tea bowl) circa 16th-17th century (Joseon Dynasty). The tea bowl is of an upright conical form supported by a high foot ring. It was decorated with incised brushwood fence patterns filled with white slip on both the interior and exterior surface. These dominant motifs were spaced by three encircling double lines. Seven chrysanthemum flowers (inka) were stamped on the lower interior surrounding a swirling tea well on the bottom. There are six spur marks known as Meato in Japanese on the interior bottom and a pointy spot in the center of the foot ring known as Tokin. Two crack lines were historically repaired by superb Kintsugi, adding a mysterious wabi-sabi appeal to the piece. The Hori-Mishima bowl was also known as Gohon Mishima. It was made in Bushan Kilns of the Southern Gyeongsang Province specifically for the Japanese market in the 16th-17th century, when the tea ceremonies in Japan demanded such ware. The bowl comes with a purple fabric pouch...

The Goryeo bronze bowls of generous proportions, with high sides and an ever so slightly everted rim. The bowls are supported on a pedestal base with a tall stem and wide, splayed ring foot. The bowls plain, save for a single engraved line circumscribing the splayed foot. The bowls with an amazingly rich and complex patina of mottled reddish browns from cuprite and dark greens from malachite. The bronze heavily cleaned to the European taste, removing most of the encrustations. Some areas of the bowls with rougher areas where the accretions could not be removed. Crafted in two parts in the spun bronze technique, then joined. The bowls are unusually thin for bronze, with the lathe lines still visible to the undersides. An unusual form and size for Goryeo period bronze utensils...
