Japanese Bronze Tripod Ritual Wash Basin (Ashitsuki-darai)

About the Item

UH80301 Japanese Bronze Tripod Ritual Wash Basin (Ashitsuki-darai), Muromachi Period, 16th century.   A five petal round form with undulating rolled edge and pinched strap detail with five petal escutcheons. The cavetto is slightly everted. The interior surface is chased with a dragon emerging behind clouds on center and other cloud forms around the inside edge. The outside is detailed with a white metal inlay continuing the cloud formation design. The overall surface texture is hammered. The bowl form is supported by three separately cast curving legs attached by three boss rivets each. Buddhist monks used this type of vessel during a monthly service of atonement and purification (fusatsu) to make amends for their sins and renew their vows. The sturdy construction and the durable surface indicates the frequent use. Weight: 1 lb. 2 oz. (517g.) Muromachi period (1392–1573). Provenance: Estate of Daniel W. Collins, Moorestown, NJ For a similar piece see: Chiswick Auctions, Asian Art, 22 February 2022, lot 526.
