About the Item
An exceptional quality antique Meiji period bronze Japanese Kagami mirror molded with cranes and presented in its original fitted case dating from the 19th century and probably from the early Meiji period. The mirror is of large, rounded shape with a raised frame rim to one side containing a a watery landscape with two cranes, one in flight and the other standing in a river below a large leaf tree interspersed with bamboo. A turtle climbs onto a rocky outcrop to one side all with wonderful detail and set against a textured ground. The mirror has a flat integral rectangular shaped handle with its original rattan wrapping. The opposite side of the mirror is flat polished. The mirror is also signed up one side. The mirror comes complete in a black fitted lacquered wooden case with its original slide cover the handle and the box has gilded leaf pattern to the surface of the box with a speckled gilded lacquered finish to the removable handle cover. Mirror dimensions are height 34.5cm, diameter 24cm. Box dimensions included in listing.
Provenance: Originating from the collection of a private gentleman and acquired originally from the UK Art Market.
The mirror is in excellent condition with some losses and damages to the edges of the lacquered outer box with areas of loss to the lacquered finish. A wonderful example in good original condition.

An unusual and fine antique Chinese Qing lacquered and inlaid papier mache handled sewing box with decorative panels dating from latter 19th or early 20th century. The sewing box is of round cylindrical shape with a swing carry handle and is inlaid with mother of pearl and abalone. The body is made up of eight oval shaped scenes of typical Chinese style with buildings and people picked out with inset abalone and mother of pearl and highlighted and contained within a gilded border. These are set between bands of patterned abalone and against a blue silk background. A similar band of abalone is applied to the swing handle. A heavy and finely cast Japanese bronze mirror decorated with pines , cranes wich are longevity symbols, The handle in the center is a a tutle which also symbolize longevity.

The small, round mirror with high walls has been intricately and exquisitely cast with symbols . The turtle has a domed shell pieced to allow a cord to be strung through for handling or hanging.
A five charactesr mark is cast on the border.
Mirror is 12 ,3 x 1,6 cm
Box is 14,2 x 5 cm
Surrounding the turtle and inscription is a densely cast landscape featuring pine trees with fantastic needles, two cranes with their 3 youngs, dense stalks of leafy bamboo. and a blooming prunus on the left side.
All are symbols of longevity. Bamboo also symbolizes resilience and prosperity. Bamboo asociated with prunus and pine are called the 3 frinds of winter.
The other side of the mirror is undecorated, and would originally have been highly polished, allowing the user to see their reflection in the polished surface.
The bronze with a wonderful, warm silver patina.
