A High Quality Pair of Japanese gilt bronze candlesticks figures of a crane standing on the back of a turtle, a lotus plant in its beak forming the candle sconce.
Meji period, late 19th century
Size: H 30 cm
In good condition commensurate with age.

This figure represent 'longevity' &
'conjugal happiness. The crane (tsuru) is said to live 1000 years, while the turtle (kame) is considered to have a lifespan of 10,000 years. The crane chooses its partner for life, while the turtle is capable of great friendship.
