About the Item

A charming late 19th-century to early 20th-century, Chinese export reverse glass painting, depicting a lady in the garden, playing with a bird. The painting comes with its original hardwood frame and the old pins in the back of the panel. You may see some white spots on the lower portion. They are not the paint lost. They are gilt spots for enhancing the theme. Reverse glass pictures became fashionable in the 18th century. Glass panels were sent from Europe to China by sea, where they were painted to order, framed, and then returned to the West for inclusion in Chinese-inspired interiors.
