Chinese Sun Yunqiao 孫雲樵 Autumn Mountain Landscape Silk Scroll Painting 59"
About the Item
Mid to early century Chinese wall hanging scroll, painted with a pair of figures riding donkeys, crossing a bridge against a landscape of mountains and gnarled pines; by artist Sun Yunqiao. Sealed in the lower right corner. Paper on silk.
Translations:
The artist name is Yunqiao Sun.
The scroll can be dated back to Year of Guimao (1903 or 1963).
The artist skillfully intertwined lines from two distinct poems to craft a new four-line verse
that echoes the autumn landscape portrayed in the painting. Notably, through the use of
synesthesia in the poem, colors like coral red are vividly evoked within the traditionally
monochrome painting of black ink. In this way, both poem and painting resonate with each
other in a harmonious and elegant dialogue.
1.謾使秋容易寂寥:Do not say autumn is fated to be
bleak and drear
2.珊瑚撐⽇護寒飆:Coral trees prop the sun,
shielding against the cold wind. (Please note: Coral
trees refer to trees with red leaves that resemble
coral, accurately representing the painting.)
3.應知真宰⾮無意:Know that the Lord of All is
never without intent.
4.驢背圖成萬樹凋:On the donkey’s back, a
painting forms—ten thousand trees wither and fade
(Please note: line 1 and 2 were cited from one.
poem, and line 3 and 4 were cited from another).
5. 癸卯秋:
—癸卯:Year of Guǐmǎo (Sexagenary Cycle Year),
this cycle repeats every 60 years:
1963,1903,1843…
—秋: autumn
—癸卯秋: autumn in year of Guimao
6. 孫雲樵 (Sun Yunqiao) — with 孫 (Sun) as the
family name, and 雲樵 (Yunqiao) as the given name

Sea and Mountains in one unique work of art
This Chinese extraordinary natural stone "painting" of a mountain range in white and gray colors is called a dream stone Shih-hua. They are cut from historic Dali marble found in the Cangshan mountains of western China. These mysterious mountains, unique in the world, are known for yielding incredible and fantastic natural landscaped works of art created over tens of millions of years from mineral inclusions that affected the process of ancient organic material which transformed into limestone and finally resulted in marble- a metamorphic hard stone.
This art form is centuries of years old since the Ming dynasty. Dream stones became favored art in the west particularly since the 19th century when French collectors named them Pierres de reve.
This thin marble stone "painting" is approximately 1/4" thick and is cut from a large slab of rough material revealing incredible patterns in soft white and gray colors. Its weight is surprisingly modest- easily hung with standard hardware.
On occasion, private collectors would invite an artisan to inscribe a poetic description onto their more important dream stones and in this case the artists' seal mark and calligraphy translation reads:
Dimensions:
Frame: 16.5 inches high and 29 inches wide.
Site: 12.75 inches high and 25 inches wide.
Provenance: Private Chinese collection, Yunnan, China.
