Japanese Antique Ancient Horses Two-Panel Gold Screen, Edo Period, 1800

About the Item

From our recent Japanese Acquisitions Travels. Japan, an early two-panel gold screen byobu depicting ancient horses at play under a tree. This screen was created from a pair of antique fusuma sliding interior doors and dates to the Edo period, circa 1800 or earlier. It is painted in the manner of the Kano school. Horses are a scarce motif for Japanese screens and we are pleased to have found this one on our last Japanese acquisitions travels. We have a matching two panel horses screen , its mate, also currently available at this time. Please write for details if interested. Background China introduced horse paintings to Japan. Japanese artists attempted to interpret horses in their natural mountain,valley, river bed , and tree environments. A horse' free wheeling spirit and its freedom to roam was an important aspect that the best artists attempted to employ to satisfy Samurai tastes of that time. The Kano school was closely aligned with Samurai class. The Samurai favored the energy and freedom horses symbolize and Kano school artists often depicted them as painted in this screen here, in unfettered and carefree family groups. Our screen is simple yet beautifully painted with a gold leaf ground and created by a skillful artist painter, signed lower right. Enticing and rare subject matter, this painting is skillfully and tastefully rendered in mineral paint pigments on paper and with a muted gold painted background. . Black lacquered wood nicely frames this serene and rare equine composition. Please look at the photographs closely that reveal the Kano artists' simple and beautiful early composition. Dimensions: 67.75 inches high and 55.5 inches wide extended. Photographed in natural light. About fusuma In Japanese architecture, fusuma (Japanese: ?) are vertical rectangular panels which can slide from side to side to redefine spaces within a room, or act as doors. They consist of a lattice-like wooden under structure covered in cardboard and a layer of paper or cloth on both sides. They typically have a black lacquer border and a round finger catch on each panel. Historically, fusuma were painted, often with scenes from nature such as mountains, forests or animals.
