About the Item
Japanese Pair of Shibayama Panels, Ca. 1900
ABOUT
Both panels have immensely rich detail articulated in shell, mother-of-pearl, and bone along with carved wood. Each panel has a vivid blue circular panel in the center of a deep black rectangular ground. The circular panels are inlaid with depictions of a parrot on an elegant hanging swing; and the other a snowy white owl on a flowering branch. Probably, originally set as a two-panel screen and then fitted into cabinet doors when arriving on the continent.
