Japanese Impressionist Painting of Trees in Snow By S Kitayama Dated 1912
Located in San Francisco, CA
An impressionist painting of a trees in snow on a wooden board in period carved gilded frame.
It is signed on the bottom right hand corner S Kitayama and dated 1912.
Further inscription in Kanji on the back of the frame.
Frame measures 17 x 20 1/2 inches
Painting measures 9 1/4 x 12 3/4 inches
Frame is original to the painting and of the period.
The painter is most likely Seitaro Kitayama (Japanese, 1888-1945), an important figure in late Meiji period credited with being the father of Japanese animation before Walt Disney started his company.
The painting style is impressionism which was keenly followed by a new generation of Japanese artists who either traveled to Europe for training or received Western publications on artists and gallery shows at home.
Kitayama, Seitaro was born on March 3, 1888 in Wakayama, and died on February 13, 1945.
In 1911, Kitayama became an apprentice to Tojiro Oshita and, while studying painting, also helped out with editing the art magazine Mizue. He soon moved to Tokyo and established the Western Art Guild of Japan and published Contemporary Western Art. He later joined the Fusain Art Group as a manager where he would support young western-style artists such as Ryusei Kishida and Sohachi Kimura by providing art supplies, in addition to holding exhibitions and publishing catalogues. On the other hand, he entered the Nikkatsu Mukojima Studio in 1916, proposed the inclusion of illustrations in intertitles, and made this his work. It was there that one of the first Japanese animations...

Early 20th Century Japanese Cherry Blossom Screen by Kano Sanrakuki
Located in Kyoto, JP
Cherry Blossoms
Kano Sanrakuki (1898-1981)
Showa period, circa 1930
2-panel Japanese Screen
Color, gofun and gold leaf on paper
Against a backdrop of gold-leafed ground, the lichen covered trunk and branches of the life-sized cherry blossom tree reach out and beyond the confines of the pictorial surface. The overall composition has a feeling of flatness which draws emphasis to the surface and the three-dimensionality of the cherry blossoms. Painstakingly built-up layers of thickly applied shell-white gofun detail the voluminous blossoms and cover large areas of this tour-de-force of Japanese Nihonga painting. By simplifying the background, minimizing the number of colors and depicting the blossoms with such heavy relief, the artist has emphasized the stunning presence of the cherry tree. The type of tree depicted is the Yae-Zakura; a double-layered type of cherry blossom famed for its beauty and strength. When we think of Japanese cherry blossoms, the first thing that comes to mind is Somei Yoshino variety, which has a single flower with five almost white petals. This type is fragile and easily blown away by strong wind or rain. Most of the double-flowered cherry blossoms begin to bloom when the Somei-Yoshino falls, and the flowering period lasts longer than that of the Somei-Yoshino.
Kano Sanrakuki originally studied painting at the Kyoto City Arts and Crafts School under the tutelage of Yamamoto Shunkyo...

Located in Milano, IT
Ancient and very rare Japanese painting made in the early 1900s, fine Japanese manufacture.
The painting has a rectangular brass frame, with rounded corners. Internally we see a further frame in yuta, classic sand colour, very nice. Yet another very small brass frame that frames the picture. The painting is a print painted on black cardboard, with whimsical and strong colors, typical of Japanese art.
This represents a scene with a man and a woman, intent on dancing, arm in arm and spinning in a typical traditional Japanese dance...

Chinese Early 20th Century Brown and Red Eight-Panel Screen with Calligraphy
Located in Yonkers, NY
A Chinese two part eight-panel wooden screen from the early 20th century, with low-relief carvings, gilt motifs and calligraphy. Created in China during the early years of the 20th century, this screen features a brown lacquered ground accented with dark red highlights, and adorned with low-relief-carved motifs in its upper section, depicting scrolling cartouches with central rosettes. Each panel showcases a vertical organization of gilded calligraphy in the center, followed by an horizontal section with scrollwork surrounding a central medallion. The lower part is adorned with additional motifs carved in low relief, depicting either vases, birds and flowers, fishes or monkeys. The ensemble is completed by meanders creating a perfect visual punctuation. The screen is currently made of two parts with four panels each. Boasting a nicely distressed patina, this early 20th century Chinese eight-panel carved wooden...

Chinese Antique Six-Panel Folding Screen with Stained Glass Geometric Motifs
Located in Yonkers, NY
A Chinese antique six-panel folding screen from the early 20th century, with green, blue and yellow stained glass, geometric motifs and wooden panels. Created in China during the first half of the 20th century, this large folding screen features six panels each adorned with a careful arrangement of opaque octagonal motifs surrounded by colorful stained glass with scrolling or textured motifs. The lower section is made of delicately raised panels surrounded by recessed accents. Folding screens likely originate back to the Han Dynasty, circa 200 BC as evidence in tombs shows. The Chinese considered screens as objects of contemplation and a source of spiritual and creative inspiration. The screens were used to protect from drafts, to provide a sense of privacy or to simply partition a room. With its nice proportions and complimenting colors, this Chinese antique stained glass folding screen...

Maekawa Bunrei (1837-1917)
A pair of low six-panel Japanese screens by Maekawa Bunrei, a later master of the Kyoto based Shijo school of painting. On the right screen a solitary white heron stands motionless in a stream. On the left screen plovers play along a shoreline. The elegant forms are executed employing fluid, minimalistic ink brushstrokes. The soft brushstrokes and the sharp light of the silver leaf lend the scenes a sense of translucence. The sophisticated composition superbly exploits the long, horizontal pictorial surface of the pair of folding screens...

Qing Dynasty Chinese Painting of a Royalty Related Couple with Dragon Motifs
Located in Yonkers, NY
A Chinese late Qing Dynasty period framed painting from the early 20th century of a royalty related couple with dragon motifs painted on a linen canvas. Created in China during the late Qing Dynasty in the early years of the 20th century, this custom framed painting depicts a couple wearing either a red (a symbol of luck in China) or green robe. The depiction of dragons relates them to the Imperial family, but having four claws and not five as codified, the couple is likely part of the royal family, not the Imperial couple themselves. Accented with typical motifs such as bats, flaming pearls and rain-filled clouds, the robes are filled with symbols. Wearing ornate headdresses, the couple is sitting on elegant chairs. Set inside custom made frames, the paintings show great signs of age. While the entire piece measures 40.5"W x 1"D x 53"H, the painting itself is 36.5"W x 49". With its vivid colors and interesting subject, this Chinese Qing Dynasty painting...
