About the Item

A wonderfully charming large and colorful Chinese hand painted wallpaper section in a carved and shaped hardwood frame. The wallpaper dates to the first half of the 20th century or earlier. The frame late 19th or early 20th century. The whole put together, circa 1970s. The painting featuring several figures in an idyllic garden setting. Two boys frolic in the garden under the watchful eye of three adults - two men and one woman. The woman dressed in beautiful robes and a pink overcoat, a fan in hand, hair secured by a fancy hairpin. One man, dressed in simple gray robes, stands with the boys in the garden. The other male figure lounges comfortably in a raised pavilion. The figures are dwarfed by giant bamboo and blossoming peony amongst a rocky outcrop in the background. The carved and joined rosewood frame shaped as either a lock pendant or a ruyi head, and carved with a bamboo, plum and pine design. Taken together, these three plants make up the "Three Friends of Winter", representing resilience, determination and perseverance, since the pine does not drop its leaves in winter, bamboo continues to send up shoots in winter, and the plum is the first tree to blossom, heralding the end of winter and coming of spring. The pigments still bright and vibrant. With a wire for hanging at the back.
