About the Item

Pair Chinese Blue Ink & Wash Peonies & Pomegranates Paintings, Lingnan School, Aged Handmade Paper, Presented in Western Blue Polychromed & Gilt Ornate Blue Polychromed Frames 19 inches wide x 24 inches high Sight Aged handmade paper measures 13 inches wide x 18 inches high Immerse yourself in the captivating allure of this exquisite pair of Chinese ink and wash paintings, where the timeless beauty of peonies and pomegranates comes alive on aged handmade paper. Each artwork is gracefully presented in an ornate blue polychromed and gilt frame, measuring 19 inches in width and 24 inches in height, with the visible artwork itself measuring 13 by 18 inches. First Painting: The Pomegranate's Tale In the first painting, the artist's masterful brushwork brings forth the pomegranate—a symbol deeply rooted in Chinese culture. Traditionally representing fertility, abundance, and prosperity, the pomegranate is often featured in wedding motifs, bestowing blessings upon newlyweds for a fruitful and prosperous union. Here, the artist employs expressive, freehand strokes to depict the fruit, choosing a striking blue hue that, while unconventional, adds a modern twist to the classic subject. The accompanying calligraphy offers a poetic touch, possibly revealing the artist's name or a heartfelt sentiment. Second Painting: The Majesty of the Peony The second painting celebrates the peony, affectionately known as the "King of Flowers" in Chinese culture. Embodying wealth, beauty, and elegance, peonies are cherished subjects in traditional art forms. The artist captures the flower's essence through bold, fluid brushstrokes, utilizing a vivid blue palette that breathes new life into the timeless motif. This imaginative color choice not only showcases the artist's creativity but also pays homage to the peony's enduring symbolism of prosperity and grace. Artistic Style and Origins: A Lingnan Influence These paintings resonate with the spirit of the Lingnan School, an art movement that emerged in southern China during the late Qing Dynasty. Lingnan artists were pioneers, blending traditional Chinese techniques with Western styles to create dynamic compositions rich in color and expression. The fusion of Eastern and Western elements in these artworks, along with the use of non-traditional colors and expressive brushwork, suggests a strong Lingnan influence. The ornate, European-style frames further hint at their creation for international collectors, a common practice in mid-20th-century Hong Kong, Taiwan, or Guangzhou. A Harmonious Fusion Together, these paintings offer a harmonious blend of traditional symbolism and modern artistic expression. The choice of blue ink breathes contemporary vitality into classic themes, while the meticulous brushwork and calligraphy honor the rich heritage of Chinese art. Presented in their elegant frames, they stand as a testament to the seamless fusion of cultural motifs and artistic innovation, ready to grace any collection with their timeless beauty.

Contemporary Chinese Ink Wash Painting by Li Jin
Located in Atlanta, GA
A contemporary ink painting on paper by Chinese artist Li Jin (1958-) presented in a white shadowbox frame. Entitled in English "Morning Practice in California", this series of work was painted in 2017 when the artist resided in US. The Chinese title inscription is "Blossom Branch" with artist's name signed in both Chinese and English. The painting is considered "Expressionistic-abstract". Using only various shades of ink, the poetic work depicts a large lotus flower with the pistil in the center composed of clusters of mediating arhats, the beings who have gained nirvana through Buddhism practice (known as Luohans in Chinese). There is a strong association of lotus flower and purity in Buddhism. The wisdom one can possibly achieve may be considered omnipresent and morphogenetical quantum and be part of everything around us. The image size is 13.5" x 13.5". Provenance: Purchased in 2017 from the Ink Studio at West Bund Art and Design Fair, Shanghai, China. Li Jin (1958-, Tianjin, China) is an ink master who draws from the tradition of Chinese literati ink painting and creates contemporary works celebrating all aspects of everyday life. Having explored color washes for two decades, Li Jin has translated them into a masterful control of tonality-the "five colors of ink"-in a series of monochrome paintings in the expressionistic-abstract "Da Xie Yi" manner. Through the ink medium's inherent sensitivity and ambiguity, they evoke the nuances of human existence and raise profound questions about self-representation and subjectivity. Trained at Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts (graduated in 1983) and has been a leading figure in contemporary Chinese ink art...
