Pair of Japanese Ink Hanging Scrolls Kano Tanyu
About the Item
A fine matching pair of hanging scrolls ink on paper mounted in green brocade borders circa Edo period (17-18th century). The Kano school painting depicts wild geese in the reeds by the margin of water, a popular subject borrowed from the Chinese tradition. Both painting were signed as Tanyu with a red seal of Morinobu, his birth name. The storage box is also present and was inscribed with the title Painting of Geese and Reeds and Kano Tanyu.
Kano Tan'yu (original name Kano Morinobu; 1602–1674) was a famous Japanese painter of Kano School from early Edo period. He was the eldest son of Kano Takanobu.
Although signed, sealed and marked, it is possible that this work was by one of his followers in his style and signed to his honor, therefore we only attribute the work to him.
When hanging, the overall measurement of each painting is 69" by 14.25", the painting itself is 39.75" by 11.5".
