About the Item
A truly wonderful and exceedingly rare abstract limited edition woodblock print by famed Japanese artist/printmaker Junichiro Sekino.
This print, which appears to be titled "Tori & Shojgo (or Shoigo as written on verso)", features a colorful, geometric abstract, almost cubist composition with a dancing central figure and two (maybe three) bird-like feathered creatures - quite a departure from his normal more traditional straight forward composition design aesthetic. Apparently, a quite scarce and rare image as we can find no other like it.
The print is double signed - once in ink within the image and also hand pencil signed, numbered (8/100), and dated (1956) by Sekino in the lower margin.
Junichiro Sekino was largely considered, along with Kiyoshi Saito, to be one of Japan's paramount 20th-century master print artists. Both were prominent leaders of the Sosaku Hanga movement. Sekino's works can be found in many museums including:
The Museum of Modern Art, N. Y., the Art Institute Chicago, the Museum of Fine Art, Boston, the British Museum, and the Portland Art Museum among many other Fine museums throughout the world.

Junichiro Sekino
Jun'ichiro Sekino was born in Aomori Prefecture, Japan, in 1914. He began making wood print art while still in middle school before formally pursuing etching with Kon Junzo. Active in the print scene, Sekino participated in the Chokojuto (1932) and Shin Hanga (1935) art shows, and exhibited with the Nihon Hanga Kyokai group as well. After winning the Teiten prize for etching in 1936, he moved to Tokyo in 1939. Jun’ichiro Sekino continued his studies at the Etching Institute of Takeo Nishida, where he also trained in oil painting and drawing.
Sekino commenced his study of woodblock prints with Koshiro Onchi and soon joined the Nihon Hanga Kyokai during the 1930s, followed by the Kokugakai in 1940. He exhibited worldwide, winning particular acclaim in the United States for his woodblock prints following World World II. In 1958, the Japan-America Society brought Sekino to the United States, where he taught at Oregon State University in 1963. Upon returning to Japan, he assumed a position at Kobe University in 1965 and received the medal of the Imperial Household Agency in 1981. Sekino’s work is greatly inspired by old Japanese and European masters alike, such as Sharaku and Albrecht Durer. The subject of his work varies, although he commonly focused on portraits, landscapes and semi-abstract designs. Jun'ichiro Sekino passed away in 1988.

A beautifully composed woodblock print by famed Japanese printmaker Kiyoshi Saito. Many consider Saito to be one of the most important, if not the most important, contemporary Japanese printmakers of the 20th century. This print, which is titled "Daitoku-ji Kyoto (D)" is from a series of Kyoto temple images that Saito created. The woodblock print features strong, contrasting colors, beautiful wood grain, and a complex design - the cross-shaped walkway pattern which is highlighted by the small precisely placed stones is repeated on the temple wall. The wood grain in the yard, temple walls and sky add another layer of compositional depth.
