About the Item

A wonderfully composed and beautifully colored print by famed Japanese artist Ohara Koson (Ohara Hōson, Ohara Shōson) titled "Egrets and Crescent Moon" (sometimes referred to as Two Cranes in Lake). Ohara Shōson (1877-1945) was a painter and woodblock artist. He was one of the the most celebrated artists of his time and at the forefront of both the shinsaku-hanga and shin-hanga (new print) art movements. He had trained in Nihonga Japanese-style painting, specializing in the naturalistic modes of the Maruyama-Shijō school. He was quite a prolific artist and is believed to have designed some 500 images. He was famous as a master of kachō-e (bird-and-flower) compositions. The print is signed in black and sealed in red in the lower corner. We believe this print is another printing technique, perhaps a later lithograph version of the original 1926 woodblock print as it is a larger print. Would be a great addition to any Japanese print or art collection or make for an eye catching stand alone accent artwork in about any setting. Condition:

The print is in very good to excellent vintage condition with no discernable issues. The frame has some light natural organic wear consistent with age and use and tears to paper backing (easily remedied. Please see photos). Beautiful and engaging.

An absolutely gorgeous and relatively rare original woodblock print by Japanese artist/printmaker Mizuno Toshikata titled "First Call of the Warbler" from his series Thirty-Six Selected Beauties (“Sanju Rokka Sen”) which he created to illustrate the daily activities of various Japanese women from different time periods and walks of life. This work features a geisha practicing the shamisen under the bright light of a full moon as the night's first warbler songbird joins her on a cherry tree branch just outside her window. It is a quite beautiful and serene scene and one of Toshikata most coveted images. This work was created circa 1892 during the Mejia period (1868-1912). It is signed and sealed by the artist with the image. Mizuno Toshikata was born on March 6, 1866 as Mizuno Kumejiro in Tokyo.
