About the Item

A wonderfully composed and quite engaging woodblock print by renowned Japanese artist/printmaker Shiro Kasamatsu (笠松 紫浪, 1898-1991) titled "Three-Headed Deity In Ashura Temple" featuring the Three-Headed Buddha statue located inside the Buddhist temple. An asura in Buddhism is a deity/demigod of the Kāmadhātu, one of the realms where a wandering soul may be reborn. They are described as having three heads with three faces each and either four or six arms. The limited edition sōsaku-hanga oban sized woodblock print dates to 1959. It is signed, stamped/sealed, titled (in Japanese), dated, and numbered (191/200) by the artist. Shiro Kasamatsu was a a key figure in the history of 20th-century Japanese printmaking. He lived and worked during the two major Japanese artistic print movements - shin-hanga (new prints) and sōsaku-hanga (creative prints). Today his work is celebrated for its blend of traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern artistic sensibilities. This piece would be a great addition to any Japanese or Buddhist art collection or make for an eye catching stand alone accent artwork in about any setting. The print is framed in a floating glass frame and is ready to display. Frame dimensions: 21.5" high, 17" wide, 1.25" deep Paper approximately 17" x 11.5"

Kiyoshi Saito Signed Limited Edition Japanese Woodblock Print Tosyodai-Ji Nara
By Kiyoshi Saitō
Located in Studio City, CA
A beautifully composed, rare woodblock print by famed Japanese printmaker Kiyoshi Saito. Many consider Saito to be one of the most important, if not the most important, contemporary Japanese printmakers of the 20th century. This print is titled "Tosyodai-Ji Nara". The wood grain and rich colors are amazing. The print is signed in white ink and stamped within the image and titled, dated (1959) and numbered (75/80) in pencil by the artist in the lower margin. This particular image is quite rare and hard to find. A copy of this print can be found in the Museum of fine Arts in Boston. Would be a great addition to any modern Japanese print...
