About the Item

19th century Carved Chinese Table Screen Blessing, Story Board. Extraordinary double sided Chinese carved wooden table screen story board. The "Fu" symbol so beautifully carved out of one side. A very special artistic rendition of the Chinese character "Fu" representing "good fortune," "happiness," & "blessings"; These two character letters are very unique exhibiting wide rounded soft lines, the shapes are full, appearing almost bulging, expressing abundance of the blessing. The artist carved this work out of the wood, messaging that good fortune & happiness are within all things and with effort we can bring them out and share them. On the reverse side is Shouxing the old man on a deer with bat flying over head, the God of Longevity. A carved border surrounds him with the Chinese meander symbol. Often called the "cloud and thunder pattern" Yunleiwen, representing life-giving rain and abundance, typically signifying prosperity and fertility, it is considered a symbol of good fortune. The stand is carved with books and scrolls representing knowledge adding insight to the blessing. Dragons are carved into the legs representing strength, protection and good fortune. This item is considered an auspicious scholars object, as it would be studied and discussed as Chinese culture and mythology. Scholars would explain and expand on the ideas of the artist as represented through the images created, based on form, carving style, detail shape, and the complete message of this doubled sided Table Screen. Wonderful piece in very good condition.
