19th Century Chinese Qing Dynasty Carved Rosewood Table Screen

About the Item

This nice large carved rosewood table screen was created in China, circa 1870. Its carved details depict a dragon flying through celestial clouds in pursuit of a flaming pearl. The workmanship is both intense and subtle with many elements in low relief while the dragon is in higher relief. The wood has developed over time a nice rich reddish brown patina which we have just have been polished to enhance the carving but not stipped or cleaned away the old surface. The image of dragons chasing pearls is a time-honored decorative device in China and can be found throughout its history placed on works of jade, porcelain, bronze and in paintings.
