Japanese Inlaid Bronze Yatate Scholars Travelling Inkwell

About the Item

A fine quality antique Japanese inlaid bronze Yatate scholars travelling inkwell dating to the 19th century and understood to be from the Edo period. A Yatate is a portable writing set used in Japan from the 13th century. The Yatate was pipe shaped and held both ink (in solid form) and a writing implement, usually a brush which was stored in the handle. A small hanging loop allowed the Yatate to be carried hung from the obi or belt. This particular example is heavily made with an ink compartment to one end with a hinged cover revealing a compartment containing original solidified ink. The long rectangular shaped handle has a hollow compartment with the open end covered by the hinged cover. An integral hanging loop is positioned below the inkwell. The handle and cover are both finely decorated with inlaid gold scroll and floral designs and the underside of the handle bears an incised maker’s signature. The Yatate has a wonderful, aged patina with some small areas of ink staining on the surface. Provenance: Acquired from the UK Art Market The Yatate is offered in excellent original condition with wear associated with age and use.
