1963 Votive Teak Wood Elephant Figure (Chiang Mai, Thailand)

About the Item

Votive Teak Wood Elephant Figure Chiang Mai, Thailand Dated: 62 years ago (c. 1960s) Material: Teak wood This finely carved elephant figure, made of solid teak and bearing an inscription with a date, was offered as a votive gift to a temple in Chiang Mai 62 years ago. Rooted in the traditions of Lanna culture, such votive figures were presented to temples as acts of devotion, gratitude, or merit-making (tham bun). In Southeast Asian spiritual practice, the elephant symbolizes strength, wisdom, protection, and royal power — making it a fitting emblem for sacred offerings. The work retains traces of age and ritual use, enhancing its authentic character and devotional presence. A meaningful and culturally rich object of spiritual and artistic value.
