Thai Gilt Bronze Seated Buddha, Lan Na Kingdom, Chiang Mai, Late 15th Century

About the Item

A rare and beautiful Thai cast and gilt bronze seated Buddha with shell inlaid eyes, style of Wat Chedi Luang, Lan Na Kingdom, Northern Thailand, region of Chiang Mai, late 15th century. The historical Buddha, Shakyamuni, is portrayed seated in virasana, half lotus position, upon a double lotus pedestal atop a raised platform, hands in bhumisparsha, the gesture of calling the earth to witness his enlightenment. In this case, the hand is not quite touching the ground. This gesture and image is called Maravijaya, the Victory over Mara. The Buddha's face is youthful, framed by pointed ears with long, pendulous earlobes, and featuring a strong patrician nose and satisfied smile. He stares out peacefully from shell inlaid eyes, an urna to the center of his forehead. His hair in the typical coiled snail shell fashion, covering pronounced ushnisha and topped with a flame finial. The gilt bronze with a wonderfully complex patina of mottled gold and bronze. Images of the Buddha Maravijaya represent the moment between the Buddha defeating the armies of the demon Mara and all their temptations, and his fully embracing his enlightenment and taking up the mantle of the Buddha. He savors his victory for one brief moment before releasing the last of his worldly attachments.
