About the Item

A delightful Thai Rattanakosin Period lacquered and gilt cast bronze figure of the Buddha in royal attire, mid 19th century, Thailand. The charming figure depicts the Buddha in dhyanasana, the gesture of meditation. The Buddha sits serenely in half lotus position, his hands resting comfortably upon his lap, one on top of the other. The Buddha is dressed in elaborate robes, cast with floral and foliate designs in high relief. Over his robe, he wears the regalia of Thai kings, with a heavy cape, diamond shaped pectoral, and a winged crown upon his head - all with studded designs in high relief, imitating heavy embroidery. A tall and narrow spire shaped finial tops the ushnisha rising from the top of his head. The buddha sits upon a high, stepped, three tiered trapezoidal platform. The top tier with a draped frontal "cloth". The back of the platform with two loops to hold a canopy, now missing. The statue cast in bronze, covered in red and black lacquer, and richly gilt. The gilding still extremely bright, with wear exposing the black lacquer beneath.

Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Minor fading. The gilding with some wear, revealing the black lacquer beneath. Some loss to the gilding and lacquer at the bottom edges. The spire finial slightly bent. Missing the canopy.

A fine early Thai Lopburi figure of a crowned and adorned Buddha, cast bronze, mid-13th century. The unusual figure of the Buddha sits in virasana upon a stylized lotus pedestal. He is dressed in the traditional monastic robes, but also adorned with a crown and jewelry, including earrings, a necklace, and jeweled belt. His hands in an atypical combination of mudras. His right hand in bhumisparsha mudra, reaching down to touch the earth, while his left hand held somewhat outwards, seemingly in varada mudra, the gesture of granting favours or wishes.
