About the Item

A lovely Thai lacquered and gilt cast bronze figure of the historical Buddha, Shakyamuni, portrayed in Maravijaya, Rattanakosin Period, early to mid 19th century, Thailand. The Buddha is portrayed in the attitude of Maravijaya, the Victory over Mara. He is seated in the half lotus position upon a three tied trapezoidal platform. He wears heavily decorated robes with raised floral designs, one shoulder bare. His regal face framed elongated ears which swoop outwards. His hair decorated in the typical style of tight curls. The ushnisha is topped by a flame finial. The Buddha finely cast, with nice definition to the details on his robe and stepped throne. The figure lacquered with red and black lacquers, and finished with a thick and rich gilding. The Maravijaya attitude commemorates the victory of the Buddha over the armies of the demon Mara. During his meditation under the Bodhi Tree, the demon Mara sent out armies to tempt the future Buddha and lead him off the path of enlightenment. Maravijaya celebrates the victory of Siddartha Gautama, the man, over the armies of Mara, capturing the moment immediately before he touches the earth to witness his enlightenment, and claim the title of Shakyamuni Buddha, the historical Buddha. His right hand rests gently over the knee, fingers pointing down, but not yet touching the earth.

Condition:

Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Minor fading. In overall good condition, with wear and rubbing to the gilding, revealing the black lacquer below. One area of lacquer loss to the exposed shoulder. The flame finial bent. Missing the canopy.
