About the Item
Antique Burmese Buddhist Decorative Backboard Mandorla Panel. A style of surround for a seated Buddha image reminiscent of a Burmese transom in shape. The peaked triangular panel intricately carved with flamiform peaks. The overall body carved in openwork with inset and applied mirrored glass shapes in cobalt blue, green, red, pink, and silvered clear. These glass insets have borders of applied gold-leafed thayo lacquer rope details, together rendering swirling floral tendril ornamentation. All resting on top of a solid raised serpent's back in higher relief with dense scales and flowers of mirrored glass. The central straight column topped with a blossoming lotus. The reverse side unornamented with later mounting addition.
Circa 1925.
