Antique Japanese Statue of Dakini Ten
About the Item
Rare and highly unusual antique Japanese statue of the esoteric deity 'Dakini Ten,' a Buddhist goddess who was associated with the agricultural deity Inari in Japan, and is represented atop a holy white fox (often linked with Inari) clutching a Buddhist thunderbolt (Vajra) in its jaws.
From the middle ages to the Meiji period, the emperors of Japan undertook a number of Buddhist rituals in which mudras and mantras were performed as part of their enthronement ceremony. The central deity was Dakiniten, in this instance, viewed as the origin of the sun goddess, Amaterasu, mythic founder of the imperial line. The statue dates from 1772-1780.
