Antique Japanese wooden Buddha statue/Edo period/seated Tathagata statue

About the Item

This is a wooden Buddha statue made around the Edo period (1603-1868). It is likely to be Amida Nyorai, the highest-ranking Buddha statue, which is an enlightened being. This Buddha statue was carved using a technique called "yosegi-zukuri," in which multiple blocks of wood are combined and then carved, rather than carved from a single block of wood. This technique began around the 11th century, and to carve a relatively large Buddha statue from a single piece of wood, a fairly large tree was needed. This was because there were size limitations when making a huge Buddha statue, and mass production was not possible. So by cutting each part of the statue, such as the torso, arms, and feet, from a separate piece of wood, there was no limit to the size, and it was possible to receive many orders. With large Buddha statues, sometimes a different sculptor would carve each part, and the work would be divided up. Because this Buddha statue is small in size, it is thought that one sculptor carved each part by attaching pieces of wood that had been cut for each part. The reason why parquet is often used even for these relatively small Buddhist statues is that it has the advantage that the wood is less likely to warp or crack. This is a beautiful Buddha statue with a quiet and solemn atmosphere. It is thought that it was originally painted with lacquer and then painted with gold. It is also thought that the main statue was originally placed in another cabinet. I had a paulownia cabinet that was just the right size, so I placed the statue in it. Both bases under the statue can be removed and separated. This handsome Buddha statue will fit in with any space, whether Japanese or Western.
