Antique Japanese Zushi mini shrine w/ Ebisu & Daikoku figurines wabi sabi mingei

About the Item

Antique wooden Zushi (miniature shrine, the "house of the Gods") with 2 wooden figurines of Daikoku & Ebisu - from Tohoku area., Japan. Manufactured in 1929 (Showa 4) written on the original box (not included to this set) This simple-yet-bold style Zushi is made from Sugi cedar, stained with deep, matted black color. It comes not only from the layers of persimmon tannin (kakishibu) & burnt pine ink, as well as deepened by smoke from the kitchen hearth & fireplace for years. Ebisu & Daikoku are the deities of fortune and wealth, commonly worshipped as a pair, many families put those figurines on the alter at home, still popular among the Japanese culture. Ebisu (on the left side) is a God of fishermen and luck, having a fishing rod and the big fish in the hands. Daikoku (on the right side) is a God of wealth, fortune, agriculture and fertility, bring a sack on his back, a magic hammer in his hand, and standing on the two rice bales.
