About the Item

It is believed to be a wooden box used by the Ifugao, an indigenous people living on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. The Ifugao are a mountain tribe who have been cultivating rice in terraced rice paddies for 2,000 years, They believe that the gods reside in the rice, and they hold ceremonies to pray and celebrate the harvest. This wooden box is thought to have been used for these ceremonies. The design of two beasts is unique and beautiful. The box is covered with soot, as if it was burned after the ritual items were placed inside, There is a distinctive smell of burnt charcoal, but it is not noticeable, especially when the lid is pressed down, It is believed to be from the 20th century. I found a similar piece in one of my reference materials, which I have included here. It is symmetrical and beautifully sculpted, and the carving is simpler rather than more elaborate. This lack of assertiveness will make it a good match for other interiors. The silhouette will look especially good when placed on a shelf or against a wall. This is a very valuable item, and there is no guarantee that an identical piece will be available in the future. It is a highly recommended objet d'art.
