About the Item

China rare antique stone inlaid wine table, middle Qing dynasty (1644-1911), 18th/19th century. Elm wood (Humu) with original pudding stone inlay. All original with no damages and no repairs. See Bonhams auction in 2011 for similar. (photo) Dimensions: 34 inches high and 38.5 inches wide and 19 inches deep A rare opportunity to acquire an attractive, original, and substantial handmade wine table with original stone inlaid top intact. It is quite hard to find one of these with the original and undamaged inlaid stone. Puddingstone is a conglomerate rock embedded with pebbles of various minerals. Named for its intriguing appearance resembling a pudding studded with raisins, puddingstone has historically been a favored material for Chinese furniture and works of art. Provenance: private New England collection acquired in 2003 Origins of pudding stone: Puddingstone, also known as either pudding stone or plum-pudding stone, is a popular name applied to a conglomerate that consists of distinctly rounded pebbles whose colors contrast sharply with the color of the finer-grained, often sandy, matrix or cement surrounding them. The rounded pebbles and the sharp contrast in color gives this type of conglomerate the appearance of a raisin or Christmas pudding. There are different types of puddingstone, with different composition, origin, and geographical distribution.
