About the Item

Chinese soapstone carving running horses, Mid-20th Century. The large magnificent soapstone carving is depicting running horses beautifully carved in the natural soapstone placed on a wooden root branch. Galloping horses in Chinese culture symbolize upwardly movement which could mean a promotion or growth in career Shoushan stone carving is an art originating in Fujian Province in Eastern China. Use of the stone for carving can be traced back as far as the Southern Dynasties and has long been used to produce handicrafts. Soapstone is a talc-schist., which is a type of metamorphic rock. It is largely composed of the mineral talc and is thus rich in magnesium. It is produced by natural chemical formations which occurs in the areas where tectonic plates collide. Changing the rocks by heat and pressure, with influx of fluids, but without melting it. The oldest identifiable soapstone sculptures date back more than 3,000 years and were made by artisans in China. Experts believe that artwork made of soapstone has survived throughout the centuries because humidity does not cause the stones to break down. The Ming Dynasty, which lasted from 1368 to 1644, saw the height of soapstone production in China. Soapstone became the standard as jade prices rose, making it too expensive for many artists. The valuation of soapstone is dependent on a variety of characteristics; the color with some colors more rare tan others, the size of the stone as well as the detail of the work.
